Seb Coe asserted that World Athletics remains strong in an unforgiving market, welcoming innovative track leagues as complementary rather than competitive.

World Athletics president Seb Coe is unafraid of upcoming track leagues like Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track League and Alexis Ohanian’s Athlos. He detailed that World Athletics is still going to stand strong.

Seb Coe explained that it is due to the commitment from World Athletics that many people have been able to seamlessly develop the other leagues, which are not a threat to the entity's existence but just a backing.

He added that they have already created a great platform for athletes and track and field fans and the innovative track and field events will only be a backing to what World Athletics has always been doing in the past years.

The International Olympic Committee presidential candidate further explained that even though most projects have snubbed field events, that is not a threat to track and field as a whole and it will not affect how things run.

“I take comfort from the fact that we now have created, in World Athletics, a platform where people think that the sport is something that is worth investing in. Those are external investments and the market is a fairly unforgiving place,” Michael Johnson said as per Athletics Weekly.

“Long before Michael or Athlos came up with this thought, I’ve always been encouraging opportunities for people to innovate, come to the table with ideas and ideally activate around fresh investment, so I don’t see it as being a tipping point. I hope that these events add lustre to what we’re already creating.”

These projects have evidently been a wake-up call for World Athletics who worked around the clock to increase prize money for their athletes. This is because, for instance, Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track league offers up to $100,000 in prize money to the winners of each Slam.

On their part, Athlos, the women-only event had $60,000 along with a Tiffany & Co. designed crown given to the winner.

Due to this, the Diamond League prize money was increased and it was confirmed that a total payout of 9.24 million US dollars.

World Athletics also introduced the World Athletics Ultimate Championship which will have a total prize pool of $10 million, with gold medalists receiving $150,000.
