Exciting Kenya Defense Forces sprinter Mercy Oketch is just 1.33 seconds shy of hitting the qualifying time for the women’s 400m at the upcoming World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Oketch has a Personal Best time of 52.33, a time she ran to finish second at the just-concluded National Championships while the qualifying time to the global showpiece stands at 51.00 and she just needs to push a little extra to make the cut to the national team.

Kenya is on a knife edge and risks becoming a pariah in the world of athletics.
She has been invited to grace the National Trials which start today at the Nyayo National Stadium and her hope will be to definitely make the time and get a chance to don the Team Kenya jersey for the first time.
Oketch will however not have it easy since the race has also attracted other strong athletes including Commonwealth Games 800m champion Mary Moraa who is the national record holder in the one-lap race. Moraa already has a wild card in the 800m and her focus will definitely be in the 400m.
Another athlete that Oketch has to look out for is Millicent Ndoro. The 36-year-old has the experience of competing in the one-lap race since she has been to the Commonwealth Games and African Championships. She will be keen to use that to her advantage.
Oketch is also a strong athlete in her own capacity. She made headlines during the Kip Keino Classic when she destroyed a strong field to win the women’s 400m race and set a new meet record of 52.42. She will be hoping to cement herself in the race as she lines up for the race today.
