Teresiah Gateri displayed a brilliant show to win the women’s 3000m race at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Japan on Sunday, May 21.

The 21-year-old long-distance runner controlled the pace for the better part of the race and was in top contention for the top honors despite facing strong opposition from Australia’s Rose Davies. Davies gave Gateri a run for her money until the last few meters to the finish line.

The race started with Hellen Lobun of Kenya leading the pack for about three laps before Gateri took the mantle as Margaret Akidor followed her closely. Davies came from behind and started leading the pack, which had now dropped to three athletes.

Lobun had been dropped to the second pack where she was leading. With one lap to go, Davies was still leading the pack but could not hold it for long as Gateri outclassed her in the last few meters to the finish line.

The 21-year-old crossed the finish line first in 8:43.81 ahead of Davies who clocked 8:44.07. Akidor sealed the podium after clocking 8:46.77.

In other races, former Youth Olympic Games 2000m SC champion Amos Kirui finished second (8:20.86) behind Japan’s Ryuji Miura who won in 8:19.07 in the men's 3000m SC. Another Japanese, Ryoma Aoki finished third in 8:21.96.

In the men’s 3000m race, the Japanese duo of Hyuga Endo and Kazuya Shiojiri placed first and second in respective times of 7:45.08 and 7:46.37. Charles Kamau sealed the podium in 7:47.31.
