Emmanuel Wanyonyi has opened up over his future plans for the 1500 meters after admitting he was "starting to like" the event following his victory in Kingston last Saturday.

Reigning Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi has opened up over the possibility of taking up running in the 1500 meters on a competitive basis more regularly following his victory in Kingston, Jamaica during the inaugural Grand Slam Track.

In a race loaded with elite names, Wanyonyi clocked 3.35.18 to claim an emphatic win ahead of American duo Yared Nuguse (3.35.36) and Cole Hocker (3.35.52), while British stars Neil Gourley (3.35.60) and World champion Josh Kerr (3.35.61) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The shock result came despite the race being tailored to suit the 1500m specialists. Hocker set a modest early pace by leading through 400m in 59 seconds and 800m in 2:00.

His 800m rival Marco Arop ended up more than four seconds adrift in sixth, while Bryce Hoppel and Mohamed Attaoui rounded out the field.

Speaking to the media after his race, Wanyonyi, whose previous best over 1500m stood at a modest 3:43.19, set in Nairobi in 2022, has now revealed his plans for the future with that event, revealing the differences with his specialist 800m race.

“For me, the 1500 meters has better tactics. The 800 meters is very competitive from the start—it's fast and intense right away. But in the 1500, I can be more strategic,” Wanyonyi said.

The 20-year-old Kenyan has shown hints of his range and endurance in recent years.

He even briefly held  the world road mile record (3:54.6) in Germany in 2024  and clinched gold in the mixed relay at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships.

Asked whether he would consider doubling up in the 1500 m in future, Wanyonyi hinted at the possibility.

“Maybe in the future, I can run it better. I’m starting to like it,” the Kitale-born athlete said.

Although Wanyonyi was able to take the overall ‘short distance’ Grand Slam price thanks to his earlier 1500m win, he had to settle for second in the 800 meters the next day.

Arop took charge  from the first lap and never relinquished the lead, winning in 1:45.13. Wanyonyi, who finished second in 1:46.44.

With a long season ahead, Wanyonyi will be keen on finding a strategic way of specialising in both events with a long-eye on potentially winning two gold medals at the Tokyo World Championships this September.
