The injury also forced the 23-year-old to miss out on the World Championships National Trials.

World 10,000m silver medallist Stanley Waithaka is set to compete in the 5000m at the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco after battling a series of injuries that saw him out of competition since late May.

Waithaka had disclosed to Nation Sport that he has not been active this season due to the niggling injury but at the moment, things seem to be coming back to normal as he has been confirmed for Monaco.

The injury also forced the 23-year-old to miss out on the World Championships National Trials leaving the mantle to Nicholas Kimeli, Jacob Krop, Daniel Simiu, and Cornelius Kemboi in the 5000m. In the 10,000m, the battle has been left to Kimeli, Bernard Kibet, and Kibiwott Kandie.

As he heads to Monaco, Waithaka will be hoping to record the first win of the season since he is yet to achieve that. He opened his track season with a second-place finish in the 10,000m at the 71st Hyogo Relay Carnival before finishing eighth in the 5000m at the 34th Golden Games.

His last race before the injury pulled him down was a 25-lap race at the Meeting Gala Fernanda Ribeiro where he finished second.

The deep field in Monaco is most likely to be what the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary has for Team Kenya. World Cross-country champion Jacob Kiplimo will be in the race keen to extend his hot streak. Kiplimo has only competed in one track race, the Bislett Games in Oslo, where he finished second

Another one to watch in the deep field is Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi, the World Cross-country silver medallist. The Ethiopian has been in impeccable form and has finished in the podium bracket twice in all three Meetings he has been to.

He opened his Diamond League campaign with third place in the 3000m in Doha, Qatar. He then switched to the 5000m where he competed in Florence and Lausanne and finished 14th and 1st respectively.

Waithaka will enjoy the company of compatriots Kimeli and Krop, who will also be bracing up for what to expect at the World Championships.
