Sports PS Peter Tum has given his reasons why fans should not give up on Ferdinand Omanyala despite his Olympics setback.

Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum has urged Kenyan fans not to give up on Ferdinand Omanyala following his dismal performance at the Paris Olympics.

Omanyala was knocked out of the men’s 100m after his eighth-place finish in the semifinal. The semifinal race was won by Kishane Thompson with Fred Kerley finishing second as they secured automatic spots in the final.

Following his performance, some fans have lost hope in Omanyala’s abilities but Tum has urged them not to rule him out just yet. Tum noted that despite his performance, he could see Omanyala’s fighting spirit and zeal to continue impacting the young generation.

“I wanted to talk about my interaction with Omanyala having had a small misstep that cost him the medal and the conversation with him was that yes, he didn’t make the team this time around but I can see the spirit in him is still alive. I can see the zeal to be able to see him want to induct others and continue working as a role model to the youth in Kenya,” Tum shared.

Tum says the government will continue supporting Omanyala as he gears up for his next races. He singled out the spirit of sportsmanship in the sprinter and lauded him for always showing up even on bad days.

“I wanted to assure him that as Cabinet, we shall continue supporting him and ensuring that he is trained more for purposes of future competitions. He is a G-Wagon of our country just like everyone else,” Tum said.

“The spirit of sportsmanship in him is what has stood out today as he was excited to continue his legacy of inspiring others to compete well and excel. I wish him well and as a government, we shall continue giving him the support he needs.”
