President William Ruto has committed Kenya to support refugees to participate in sports to the highest level.

The president says Kenya will work with the International Olympic Committee as well as the United Nations and Refugee Agency in this venture. The President pointed out that these efforts are aimed at harnessing the athletic talent and potential of refugees, especially at Kakuma, Turkana County, and positioning the camp as a hub for Olympic talent.

Ruto was with the IOC president Thomas Bach as well as the United Nations commissioner for refugees Filippo Grandi who made a courtesy call on the President at Statehouse Nairobi, on Friday.

“We commit to work with your organisations in the development of sports infrastructure and provision of education and training programmes and facilities,” he said.

The president said his motivation stems from the fact that sportsmen and women have given the country a global profile because of the gold-medal winning exploits. Ruto, who was at the forefront in championing East Africa's successful joint bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, added that Kenya is identified by others as a running nation.

"Sports has really given us a profile as a country. In fact if you talk to people who do not know Kenya, those who come close they say ooh those people who run," the president hilariously remarked in a Citizen TV interview.

He added: "At Least they know there's something that happens in this country so we are very proud of our sportsmen and women."

Bach on his part, said Kenya's success at the Paris Olympic Games was a reflection of the government's continued support on sports.
