The CS has revealed the prize money structure for the Kenyan podium finishers at the World Under-20 Championships, noting that he will add each one of them Ksh100,000 from his pocket.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has unveiled a hefty prize purse for Kenyan medallists at the World Under-20 Championships scheduled for August 27 to 31.

Mary Moraa’s cousin Sarah Moraa, fresh from winning the gold medal at the African Championships, will be hoping to continue her winning streak in Peru, Lima as she contests the 800m.

Amos Serem’s younger brother, Edmund Serem, will contest the 3000m steeplechase with the hope of reclaiming Kenya’s title that was lost during the 2022 edition of the event in Cali, Colombia. Amos had won the title at the 2021 World Under-20 Championships, competing on home soil.

“When you return, I’m sure everyone is aware of their right to prize money. If you win a gold medal, you will receive Ksh500,000 which will be given to you directly. If you win the silver medal, you will be given Ksh350,000 and when you win the bronze, you will be given Ksh150,000,” Murkomen aid.

“I want to encourage you to go out there and do well and for everyone who wins a medal, I will add them Ksh100,000 from my own pockets,” he added.

On his part, Sports PS Peter Tum urged the team to put in their effort and ensure they bring back medals.

“We expect that since you have trained well, you will be able to beat everyone that you race against. The other day when the CS was brought in, he came to Paris and we won two gold medals on the same day. He came here when you were preparing for the Olympics and we expect you to win,” he said.
