CyBrian Kotut was beaten by Milkesa Mengesha to the title by just five seconds after the Ethiopian pulled clear in the final stretch.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has predicted that marathoner CyBrian Kotut will win future marathons after finishing second in the Berlin Marathon on Sunday.

Kotut was beaten by Milkesa Mengesha to the title by just five seconds, after the Ethiopian pulled clear in the final stretch to finish in two hours, three minutes 17 seconds, despite big names missing, with the race coming just over a month after the end of the Paris Olympics.

Kotut crossed the finish line in 2:03:22  with Ethiopia's Haymanot Alew  third in 2:03:31.Ethiopia dominated the 50th edition of the marathon, with winners in both the men's and women's races and runners in five of the six podium places.

"Congratulations, Cyprian Kotut, on coming a strong 2nd in the Berlin Marathon. Setting a personal best time and missing the first position by only 5 seconds is a clear and loud statement that you are on course to win the race in future tournaments," Morkomen said on X (Twitter).

The CS however, challenged Kenyan marathoners to end the season on a high with the Chicago and New York marathons providing a redemption opportunity.

"Kudos, too, to Stephen Kiprop for coming 4th. To everyone who represented our country today, well done. We will close the year stronger and better with the upcoming Chicago and New York marathons," he added.

Kiprop (2:03:37), was the other Kenyan to finish in the top eight positions.
