Ababu Namwamba has explained why the Ministry of Sports cannot stop Kenyans from switching allegiance.

Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has explained that an athlete’s decision to switch allegiance cannot be changed by the new reward scheme.

Namwamba explained that there is very little the Ministry of Sports can do to ensure that an athlete continues running for Kenya.

The CS noted that representing the country should be a personal choice since no amount of money can buy patriotism.

“The choice to run for Kenya or to switch allegiance or nationality cannot be fixed by rewards…you can’t buy patriotism or fidelity to the national flag.

No amount of money can buy that and the pride of Kenya has no price. We can give athletes the amount of money that we have but if they are not patriotic to the core, they will still switch nationalities,” he explained.

Namwamba added that they are working around the clock to take better care of athletes. Previously, there have been several cases of athletes being mistreated when they go for national duties including the World Championships and Olympic Games.

However, Namwamba disclosed that they are slowly changing the narrative to ensure that athletes are comfortable.

“As a country, we need to take better care of our athletes and we admit that previously, that has not been the case.

We have not had a definite, deliberate, and intentional reward scheme for our athletes and there was a lot of uncertainty towards that.

However, at the moment, an athlete is aware of what to expect when they break the world record,” Namwamba explained.

He added that athletes are also aware of how much they will be given as they head to the Olympic Games in Paris, France next year and even as they pitch camp at the Miramas Training camp.

“This scheme ensures that athletes are aware of what to expect and they know that the country actually cares for them,” he said.
