The female sprinter, who was a victim of the World Athletics DSD rules believes she still has a chance of redemption.

Kenyan sprinter Maximilla Imali still believes her future in the sport is bright despite the stringent rules by World Athletics governing female athletes.

Maximilla Imali is among the women who have high levels of testosterone and in 2023, her dream of competing on the global stage were shattered following the new rules from World Athletics.

As per the new rules, World Athletics president Seb Coe and the committee required that all the DSD athletes would be required to cut their blood testosterone level to below 2.5 nanomoles per litre, down from five.

World Athletics further noted that the athletes are further required to remain under the threshold for two years in order to compete internationally in the female category.

In the previous rules, DSD athletes were only restricted from competing in events ranging from 400m to a mile but they have since been broadened to cover all distances.

Despite the tough rules, Imali has expressed optimism about the 2025 season as she ushered in the new year. Imali noted that there have been a series of challenges in her career but she is the one who truly knows what her life is all about.

In an emotional post on her Facebook page, Imali said: “Dear career, where everyone has an opinion about what you do without even knowing you. Everyone just looks at the results but never the circumstances.

“Thank you for the best times and the worst times. Everything I’ve been taught can’t ever be learned from books. Never reached my full potential, never got the opportunities, so many fights of unfairness but never defeated. I’m excited for the future…I salute.”

In a past interview with CNN Sport, Imali opened up about how tough it was to be told that she could no longer compete in the female category due to her condition.

She said that she was called her and informed her that she could no longer continue her career unless she followed the rules and that really shattered her lofty ambitions.

“Max, you cannot run because you have high testosterone in your blood. They did not tell me anything concerning my body. After we did every examination, they were just putting the results in the envelope. Then they take that envelope to Athletics Kenya,” she said.

That was a major setback in her career and there was a lot of discrimination that came with her condition but she is slowly picking up the pieces looking to bounce back stronger.
