Donovan Bailey criticized track and field stakeholders for their lack of respect toward retired legends, contrasting this with the respectful treatment of past champions in other sports.

Donovan Bailey agrees with Justin Gatlin, Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay on the issue of track and field stakeholders lacking respect for their legends.

At the Paris Olympic Games, some of the legendary athletes struggled to access the stadium and watch the athletes compete and Donovan Bailey believes retired athletes deserve better treatment than how they are being treated at the moment.

Speaking on ‘The Powells’ YouTube Channel, the double Olympic champion revealed that golfers who are in the Masters category are treated with utmost respect and given priority when it comes to accessing events.

He explained that track and field legends have to beg to be treated with respect, explaining that other sports like basketball, the Superbowl and golf always do that even without being forced into it. He explained that track and field is currently the only sport where stakeholders are still fighting with legendary athletes.

“The problem that we have is a slavery mentality, the problem that we have is ego check and again I’m going to give props to Asafa Powell for sitting down with Tyson Gay and Justin and having a conversation,” Donovan Bailey said.

“When I say this, I’m talking about other sports, like golf, when you are playing in the Masters category, you get a green jacket and are allowed in that place forever. In Superbowl, the respect is there…we are the only sport where there are still people fighting when they are done and retired,” he added.

The 1994 Commonwealth Games champion revealed that the people handling the affairs of the legendary need to be checked. At the moment, Donovan Bailey explained that they should all be happy because of their achievements and it should not be a case of power struggles.

“This is the only sport that doesn’t respect the entire history of athletes from back, from Jesse Owens to the kids who are running right now. We are the only sport that has former champions, which is the dumbest thing that you can say,” he said.

“There is disparity, there are people who still need an ego check or ego boost. Some people want to be the guy in the room as opposed to being in a round table. We should all be able to laugh now.”
