Sifan Hassan clocked 2:13:44 to cross the finish line first ahead of the defending champion Ruth Chepng'etich at the Chicago Marathon.

London Marathon champion Sifan Hassan is now the Chicago Marathon champion after destroying a strong field to clinch the title in 2:13:44.

Hassan stunned defending champion Ruth Chepng'etich who was forced to settle for second place in a time of 2:15:37. Alemu Megertu completed the podium in 2:17:09.

This is Hassan's second win in the marathon after her debut at the London Marathon earlier this year where she also reigned supreme.

Meanwhile, the women’s race started off with a pack of more than 10 strong women each vying for a podium finish in the deep field.

Passing the 10km mark in 31:05, Chepng’etich looked very composed, closely followed by Dutchwoman Hassan. Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh was also looking comfortable running in third place.

Joycilline Jepkosgei was running in fourth-place, also working hard to close the gap that now seemed to be growing wider.

As the women passed the 15km mark, the defending champion was still in the lead, with Hassan holding onto her. Yeshaneh and Jepkosgei were now running in third and fourth place respectively chasing the duo that was looking poised for title contention.

Hassan looked overconfident as the duo passed the 18km mark and Chepng’etich was now running behind the double Olympic champion. As they passed the 20km mark, Chepng’etich took charge again as Hassan followed her closely.

The Kenyan passed the mark in 1:02:14 and Hassan held onto her to also pass the mark in 1:02:16. Immediately after passing the half km mark, Chepng’etich opened a gap between her and the World 5000m silver medallist and was now under the guidance of her pacemakers who were doing incredibly well.

Having opened the gap, Chepng’etich passed the 25km mark in an impressive 1:05:42 as Hassan passed the mark second in 1:05:48. Megertu Alemu and Jepkosgei were running in third and fourth place, chasing Hassan and Chepng’etich.

Hassan then made a resounding comeback to take charge at the 30km mark as she passed it in 1:34:00 and Chepng’etich passed the mark in 1:34:10. At the 30km mark, Jepkosgei had now come up and was running in third place.

As they passed the 35km mark, Hassan was still leading the pack clocking 1:50:17 closely followed by Chepng’etich who passed the mark in 1:50:48. the Dutchwoman then passed the 40km mark in 2:06:36 as Chepng'etich closely followed her.

With the finish line in sight, Hassan did not have any competition with her since she was about 76 seconds ahead of Chepng'etich. She then sprinted to the finish line and clocked 2:13:44 to win the race.
