Unfortunately, she missed the chance on Friday night after clocking 21.48 to cross the finish line.

Two-time World 200m champion Shericka Jackson had made her intentions of going for the late Florence Joyner’s world record this season but she has unfortunately missed it by 0.14 seconds.

During the pre-race press conference of the Diamond League meeting in Brussels, Jackson disclosed that she wanted to break the record and had expressed her interest in breaking it in the Belgian capital.

She said: “At the World Championships I was so close, just a little wind and I would have been the world record holder.

"Coach and I have spoken and I think we are going after it this year and I hope to get it tomorrow if I do. That would probably ease a little pressure for me going to Eugene.

"If not, we have another shot at Eugene and as I said, there is no perfect race but I just want to run a good race this season.

Unfortunately, she missed the chance on Friday night after clocking 21.48 to cross the finish line. The late Joyner’s record stands at 21.34 and Jackson is the only woman who has gotten close to the record.

In the race, Anthonique Strachan of the Bahamas finished second in a time of 22.31 as USA’s Jenna Prandini finished third after clocking 22.47.

Meanwhile, Jackson ran the second-fastest time ever after clocking 21.41 to reign supreme at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

She will now give the world record another shot at the final Diamond League Meeting, the Prefontaine Classic, in Eugene, USA.

The event is scheduled for September 16 and 17 and it will definitely promise to be a thrilling showpiece since it has also attracted World champions Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson.
