Mary Moraa opened up about her close friendship with Sha’Carri Richardson, which began in 2022 and has grown as they continue to support each other in competitions like the Diamond League Meetings.

Mary Moraa has opened up about the special bond she shares with American sprint queen Sha’Carri Richardson and where their friendship started.

Mary Moraa has always been a great cheerleader of Richardson, and this season, she has been seen cheering her on in different races including the Diamond League Meeting in Zurich. Both of them were coming from the Paris Olympic Games having not met their expectations and they managed to claim wins in Zurich.

At the Olympics, Mary Moraa rounded up the podium in the women’s 800m, finishing third behind Keely Hodgkinson and Tsige Duguma. On her part, Sha’Carri Richardson, a favourite to win the women’s 100m, finished second behind Julien Alfred.

After winning her 800m race in Zurich, Mary Moraa remained in the stands to cheer on her ‘best friend’ who also claimed the win in the women’s 100m, beating Julien Alfred.

“I can say Sha’Carri is my favourite, so we have been friends since 2022, so when we see each other competing it’s like ‘Wow’. She is my real best friend from my heart,” Moraa told Sports Passion when asked about her friendship with Richardson.

After their bounce back in Zurich, the reigning world 800m champion could not hide her joy as she shared a photo with Sha’Carri Richardson and captioned it: “Yes buddy...we bounced back like we never left.”

Mary Moraa and Sha’Carri Richardson seemingly met at the Diamond League Meeting final in Zurich where Richardson finished seventh in the women’s 100m final while Moraa won the women’s 800m.

In 2023, they met at a series of Diamond League Meetings and Moraa documented the times they spent together, sharing photos and videos on her social media. At last year’s Prefontaine Classic, Moraa shared a video of herself and Sha’Carri Richardson jamming to a Swahili gospel song.

“Here we go again with my bestie…Sha’Carri Richardson much love. A dance before the real dance with Sha’Carri Richardson,” Moraa wrote in the caption.
