Allyson Felix has explained why she believes Gabby Thomas is on track to surpass her legacy after the new American sprint queen delivered three gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

American sprint icon Allyson Felix has praised Gabby Thomas following a remarkable 2024 campaign that saw the rising star secure three gold medals, including a dominant victory in the 200m at the Paris Olympics.

Thomas’s triumph in the absence of injured rival Shericka Jackson solidified her place as America’s new sprint queen.

Thomas, who grew up idolizing Felix, became the first American woman to win the 200m Olympic title since Felix’s gold at the London 2012 Games. Felix, a seven-time Olympic champion, shared her admiration for Thomas while analyzing her performance on Netflix’s Sprint series.

“She is confident, and I think she is really stepping into her own,” Felix observed, offering her endorsement of Thomas’s growing legacy.

For Thomas, receiving Felix’s approval was a surreal moment. Speaking after her victory in Paris, she reflected on the journey that led her to this milestone.

“Being the first woman to win the 200m gold since Allyson Felix in 2012 is such a great feeling because I have looked up to her for so long, ever since I was a child,” Thomas shared with Olympics.com.

“She’s such great representation, but I still never imagined that I would be in that exact position. To be here and follow in her footsteps is such an honor—not only because of what she does on the track but also because of her work off the track and what that means for myself and other young girls,” Thomas added.

Thomas’s 200m gold medal was achieved in a swift 21 seconds, but the path to that podium was paved with years of effort and perseverance. The 27-year-old sprinter reflected on her growth since her 200m bronze medal finish in Tokyo.

“I’ve grown so much as an athlete since Tokyo,” Thomas explained. “It’s all part of this process and this grand play of working my way up to be a gold medalist. It’s about going for it, taking that opportunity, and doing it.”

She attributed her success to relentless dedication, adding. “It’s a culmination of just years, months, weeks, days, and minutes of making the right choices over and over again so I can have the opportunity for gold.”

Beyond her accomplishments on the track, Thomas draws inspiration from Felix’s legacy, particularly her advocacy off the track. As Thomas continues her rise, her performances in Paris signal a passing of the baton from one American sprinting legend to another.

With her confidence soaring and a growing list of accolades, Thomas has firmly established herself as a leading figure in women’s sprinting, carrying forward the legacy of Allyson Felix and inspiring the next generation.
