Faith Kipyegon and Shericka Jackson are among the five finalists for Women’s World Athlete of the Year as Sha'Carri Richardson misses out on the top spot.

Double world record holder Faith Kipyegon and two-time World 200m champion Shericka Jackson are among the notable names among the five finalists for Women’s World Athlete of the Year ahead of the World Athletics Awards 2023. 

The other athletes to make it to the list include Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, and Dutch woman Femke Bol.

Reigning World 100m champion Sha’Carri Richardson is one of the notable names to miss out on the final five. Other athletes to miss out on the list include reigning World 3000m SC champion Winfred Yavi and Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh.

Meanwhile, the five athletes who have made it to the final list have achieved sensational performances across a range of athletics disciplines in 2023, winning titles and breaking world records at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, one-day meeting circuits, Label road races, and other events around the world.

Assefa made it to the list after winning the Berlin Marathon and setting a new world record time at the event. Bol is the reigning World 400m hurdles champion and she also holds the World indoor 400m record.

Jackson is the reigning World 200m champion and 100m silver medallist and also the Diamond League 100m and 200m champion.

Kipyegon made it to the list courtesy of her record-breaking spree that saw her set the 1500m, 5000m, and one-mile world records. She is also the World 1500m and 5000m champion. Rojas is the World champion and Diamond League champion over the triple jump.

A three-way voting process determined the finalists. The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family cast their votes by email, while fans logged their decisions online via the World Athletics social media platforms where a record 2 million votes were registered.

The World Athletes of the Year will be announced on World Athletics’ platforms on December 11, as part of the World Athletics Awards 2023.
