ATHLETICS Sandra Felis Chebet, Vincent Kimutai dominate Athletics Kenya Cross-Country opener in Machakos

Two-time Africa U20 silver medallist Sandra Felis Chebet of Kenya Police and KDF’s Vincent Kimutai won the AK Cross-Country series opening meeting dominated by Lemotit camp.

Two-time Africa U20 silver medallist Sandra Felis Chebet of Kenya Police and Vincent Kimutai of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) emerged the winners of the senior races during the opening leg of the Athletics Kenya Cross-Country Series at Machakos People’s Park on Saturday.

Chebet saw her experience come in handy as she floored her opponents in the senior women’s 10km race which she won in 34:02.06 ahead of Mercy Chepkorir of Lemotit Athletics Camp who clocked 35:04.4 for second place while her stable-mate Teresa Cherotich (35.09.1) completed the podium.

Monica Wanjiru of Vota clocked 35:25.0 to finish fourth ahead of former World Cross-Country champion Winfred Mbithe of Police who stopped the clock at 35:48.6.

In the senior men’s 12km race, Kimutai clocked 29:39.1 for victory with Machakos’ very won Arthunus Kioko (29:42.2) finishing second while policeman Brian Kiptoo timed 30:07.6 for third place. 

Kenya Police also claimed fourth place which went to Kiplimo Naibei after timing 30:20.4 while Shadrack Kiptoo from Synonis finished fifth in a time of 30:26.4.

In the men’s U20 8km race, Clinton Kimutai of Keringent Athletics Camp clocked 23:20.6 to win the race ahead of Nakuru duo Vincent Kibet (23:48.7) and Shwdrack Kemboi (23:52.7) who finished second and third respectively.

Emmanuel Yegon from Bomet timed 23:57.0 for fourth place while Daniel Kioko from Ndombi, Makueni timed 24:04.8 for fifth place.

The women’s U20 6km race was won by Diana Chepkemoi of Lemotit, who finished in 19:58.1, ahead of Kaptagat’s Sylvia Chelagat (20:11.3) while Florence Chekoech, also from Lemotit, completed the podium in 20:30.1.

Lemotit swept four of the top five positions with Harzel Kiptoo clocking 20:39.0 while Sharon Chekemoi timed 20:52.1 for fourth and fifth places in that order.

Kapsokwony in Mt Elgon, Bungoma County will host the next leg of the series on October 21.
