Three individuals, including the wife of Kenyan athlete Samson Kandie, deny charges in his murder case.

Eldoret High Court on Tuesday saw the dramatic proceedings in the case involving the murder of slain Kenyan athlete Samson Kandie as his wife Rose Chepkemboi Rotich alongside two others denied charges of conspiring to kill the marathon champion.

Chepkemboi, a mother of four, stood alongside co-accused Jamlick Kiptoon Morogit and Vincent Ng'ososei Kiprono as the courtroom, filled with the family of the late athlete, observed the accused plead not guilty.

The state, represented by counsel David Fedha, presented a charge sheet that pointed to Ms. Rotich as the alleged mastermind behind Kandie’s murder.

“The evidence at hand implicates Ms. Rotich (Chepkemboi) in a premeditated plan to eliminate her husband and we intend to prove this with due diligence,” said Fedha.

The prosecution accuses Rotich of working with Morogit and Kiprono to commit the crime, which has shocked the close-knit community of Elgon View in Eldoret.

The murder reportedly took place on the night of October 3, 2024, at Kandie’s residence in Elgon View Estate.

According to the police, Kandie was found critically injured and was rushed to Real Hospital in Eldoret, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The investigation revealed that the only item missing from the scene was Kandie’s phone, adding another layer of intrigue to a case already steeped in controversy.

Police reports indicate that the suspects fled the scene following the attack but were later apprehended.

State counsel Fedha further opposed the defense’s plea for bond, urging a comprehensive background check by probation officers to determine the accused’s suitability for release.

Justice Reuben Nyakundi deferred the bond application, instructing the defense to formally submit the request and await an assessment report from the probation team.

“The release of the accused on bond will require verification that they meet all stipulated legal conditions,” said Justice Nyakundi.

Defense counsel Momanyi was also instructed to ensure that all sureties met the court’s requirements, including submitting affidavits verifying compliance with bond conditions.

The court set December 2 as the date for a ruling on the bond application.
