African champion in the women's hammer throw Sade Olatoye has joined an elite league of world throwers to go beyond the 70m mark in the event.

Olatoye launched her implement to a massive Personal Best (PB) of 70.86m for a memorable win at the Oklahoma Throws Series this past Saturday.

By doing this, the newly crowned Nigerian champion obliterated her previous lifetime best of 69.89m and became the second female thrower from the country to go over the 70m mark.

Her new record would have been a national record but for Annette Echikunwoke's 75.49m set while still representing Nigeria in 2022, before she switched allegiance to the USA.

Notwithstanding, Olatoye will cherish her performance as it puts her in a good position and builds her confidence of peaking at the right time ahead of the World Championships in Budapest next month.

There she'll hope to replicate a better 70m throw, which may guarantee her a spot in the final and become the first Nigerian athlete in history to achieve such a feat.
