Ruth Gitonga triumphed in the Mt. Longonot Trail Challenge despite the tough course and lack of preparation, viewing the win as a springboard for future opportunities.

Newly crowned Mt. Longonot Trail Challenge champion Ruth Gitonga has recounted the tough race and challenging course on her way to claim top honours in the hotly contested outing.

Ruth Gitonga obliterated a strong field comprising experienced runners like Philaries Kisang and Joyline Chepngeno to take the win in a time of 1:14:50. Kisang and Chepngeno came in second and third, clocking 1:15:25 and 1:16:45 respectively.

Speaking after the race, Ruth Gitonga admitted that she had not trained for the event and was preparing for a road race before the opportunity presented itself. She could not let that chance go and she went out to try her luck.

She revealed that everything was difficult from the start and she had to put in extra effort to ensure she finished among the top and luckily, she was the first to cross the finish line after an hour and some minutes of torture.

“The race was very tough because that was my first running on such a course but I thank God I came first. I had not trained for this mountain running because I was getting ready for a road race but I decided to come for this race and see how things would turn out,” Ruth Gitonga said.

“The course was very difficult but I’m grateful for God who gave me the strength to keep pushing.”

After the race, she also revealed that she has not plans going forward but will certainly go back to training and continue sharpening her tallons for what lies ahead.

Ruth Gitonga is sure that the win has set her up for great things in the coming races and can’t wait to explore the opportunities.

“I’m now going to train as I wait for what will come next…this was my first time being here and I had not even visited the course before,” she added.
