Hellen Obiri is highly charged up for Sunday’s New York City Marathon as she has eyes set on running a faster time, motivated by Ruth Chepng’etich.
The two-time Boston Marathon champion explained that watching Chepng’etich run under 2:10 at the Chicago marathon was a motivation booster and she is keen on working extra hard to ensure she also posts faster times.
At the Chicago Marathon, Ruth Chepng’etich became the first woman to run under 2:10, clocking an astonishing 2:09:56 to win the race. Going into the streets of New York on Sunday, Hellen Obiri looks to emulate Chepng’etich’s astonishing run.

African runners were among those who dominated the scene in 2024 and among them, there were youngsters who impressed, earning them bumper rewards in the process.
The Olympic marathon bronze medallist added that running on a flat course, she might clock 2:09 or even a faster time but explained that
“Before the Olympics I had an injury and therefore could not train well but after that, I was feeling much better and decided to get into the grind. It was amazing, I never thought anyone would run under 2:10 but now I feel like everything is possible and I feel more motivated to work extra hard to get good times,” Hellen Obiri told Letsrun.com.
The two-time world 5000m silver medallist added that she has no doubts going into the race since she has done enough training and is in great shape. Hellen Obiri added that she has no injury and hopes to wake up on the good side of the bed on Sunday and have a great race.
“At the moment, I don’t have any complain but you know when going for a race, the way you wake up is what matters. For now, I can’t say I have an injury, I’m feeling very okay and I’m feeling very excited and ready to compete with the top athletes,” Hellen Obiri added.
The former world 10,000m silver medallist will be up against a formidable field that has attracted former New York City marathon champion Sharon Lokedi, American Dakotah Lindwurm and another Kenyan, Sheila Chepkirui.
