Ronald Kimeli Kurgat and Gladys Chemutai triumphed in the 42km races at the Stanchart Nairobi Marathon, with Vincent Mutai and Caroline Olbara winning the 21km races, and John Wambua taking victory in the men’s wheelchair race.

Ronald Kimeli Kurgat and Gladys Chemutai were flawless as they dominated the 42km races at the Stanchart Nairobi marathon.

The men’s race saw Kurgat clock 2:13:05 ahead of the duo of Dominick Kipkirui and Peter Kwemoi Ndorobo who clocked 2:13:13 and 2:13:14 respectively.

“It was not easy, we tried our best until the last km and I decided to give my all and keep going. I was expecting to win today because my colleague gave me the motivation to keep going and I’m grateful to God for giving me the strength,” Ronald Kimeli Kurgat said after the race.

The women’s 42km race was won by Gladys Chemutai who put in the work, leading from gun to tape and taking home the top prize. She stuck onto her pace makers who did a great job ensuring she maintained her momentum all the way to the finish line.

Chemutai crossed the finish line in a stunning 2:31:52 ahead of Caroline Koech and Joy Kemuma who clocked 2:35:00 and 2:36:06 respectively.

“I’m grateful to God for this win…it was not easy but I’m happy to have won the race. This is my third time racing here and I was not expecting to win…last year I finished fifth here. I train in Iten and I went back to the drawing board and put in the work and I thank God I have honoured my promise to win this race,” she said after the race.

Vincent Mutai also ran a tactical race to claim the win in the men’s 21km race, having had a few struggles during the race where he vomited twice. However, he did not let the setbacks affect his stamina as he continued controlling the pace in the race and his efforts eventually paid off well with a striking win.

Mutai crossed the finish line in 1:03:27 ahead of Keyborn Obato and Silas Chepkwony who clocked 1:03:34 and 1:03:51 respectively.

“The race has been okay and the weather has been perfect…I had prepared well for the race and I knew there was something good for me here today. I had not expected to win but from my preparation, I knew I could win. I will now go and race in cross country races,” he said.

Meanwhile, Caroline Olbara reigned supreme in the women’s 21km race, also running a smart race to dominate the field. Olbara clocked 1:11:06 ahead of Gladys Koech and Esther Chemutai who timed 1:12:10 and 1:12:12.

The men’s wheelchair race was won by John Wambua in 1:29:01 with Milton Ilahuya coming in second after clocking 1:34:56. Caleb Henry rounded up the podium, clocking an astonishing 1:37:59 to cross the finish line.

“I put a lot of work before coming to race here and I’m glad to have managed to claim the win. This is proof that I’m ripe for an international marathon and I’m ready when the opportunity presents itself,” John Wambua said.
