During the sixth Athletics Kenya weekend meet, Kipng’etich braved through the tough weather conditions to win the men's 10,000m in 28:16.08.

Distance runner Maxon Kipng’etich has his eyes set on qualifying for the World Championships scheduled for August 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary.

It will be his first time representing the country if he makes it to the national team. Kipng’etich revealed that he only performed on the big stage during the nationals in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association games in 2018.

He represented his school, Kosirai Secondary School in Nandi county, over 1500m and 3000m, where he finished third and fourth, respectively. Kipng’etich now believes he has all it takes to give it a shot at the national trials for a global show slated for later this year.

“I now want to test myself and I hope I will make Team Kenya for the World Championships. That remains to be my main goal this year,” he said.

During the sixth Athletics Kenya weekend meet, Kipng’etich braved through the tough weather conditions to win the men's 10,000m in 28:16.08.

This marked the second time he was competing over the 25-lap race since he made his debut over the distance at the second AK weekend meet. At the event, he clocked 28:21.14 to settle for second place.

The qualifying time for the men’s 10,000m at the World Championships currently stands at 27:10.00.

“I have been working very closely with my coach with an aim of improving my time. This was my second time competing in the 10,000m and I am happy with the time I have posted. I have been doing a lot of speedwork and that’s what has helped me,” he said.

Kipng’etich kickstarted his career over the 1500m and 3000m distances but has now switched to the 5000m and 10,000m. He lamented that injuries have been his major setback.
