The retired sprinter advised Noah Lyles on how he can defend his 100m and 200m titles at the 2025 World Championships, warning that distractions could hinder his performance against rising competition.

Retired Bahamian sprinter Rodney Green has urged Noah Lyles to focus on one thing at a time if he is to win three gold medals again at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Speaking on the Ready Set Go podcast, Rodney Green urged Noah Lyles to leave the 400m world record alone for now and focus on his priorities or else he will lose track and might end up missing out on the most important things in his career.

He did not rule out the fact that there is a lot of competition in the 100m and 200m at the moment with the rise of sprinters like Oblique Seville, Kishane Thompson, Letsile Tebogo, Fred Kerley and Kenny Bednarek. All of them will want a piece of the gold medal and for Noah Lyles to defend his titles and achieve his goals, he will have to dig deep.

“If Noah stays the course, and doesn’t talk about this 400m world record, and stays away from that…I think Noah is more focused on chasing the retired athletes, and when I say retired athletes and one of them is not retired, the retired athletes would be the top five,” Rodney Green said.

“There’s Usain Bolt, you (Justin Gatlin), Asafa. He’s looking to get the American record within the 100m and try to get the world record in the 200m. If his concentration areas are in these two, he had a fair shot at it last year to try and see in both years what he can do.

“I think they can go back and fine-tune it to where he can come back and try and be a triple-count champion again at the World Championships which will definitely set him up to breathe the air of the top five. It’ll be kind of like once he gets to Triple Crown again, it’s kind of hard not to put him in that area.”

Noah Lyles is currently the fastest American over the 200m and he will be looking to shatter Tyson Gay’s 100m national record. The reigning Olympic 100m champion also has eyes set on Usain Bolt’s 200m world record of 19.19 seconds.

Rodney Green also pointed out that one great quality about Noah Lyles is that he does not focus on his competitors but his goals.

“He is always looking for icon status and for him to be icon status, he has to be number one in this country (America) or number one period. He is chasing a legacy and is not competing against people, he’s competing against the clock,” he added.
