Nairobi City Marathon race director Ibrahim Hussein is optimistic that more people will register for the Nairobi City Marathon scheduled for Sunday, July 2.
Hussein disclosed that so far, about 3000 people have registered for the event but he remains bullish about having about 10,000 more athletes registering.

Tuwei said the sponsorship was a big boost to the event's prize money and operations.
“We have about 3000 now but we are going to get more as we approach the race this week. We are targeting about 10,000 athletes this year since we had about the same number last year.
I guess because of time we might get the same number or even a little bit more,” Hussein said.
He added that the Local Organising Committee decided to change the 5km race to the 6km race to enhance the uniqueness of the event. He revealed that the race might be a fun run but it has attracted some elite runners who might break records.
“But it is also to encourage those who cannot run a marathon to just come and have fun. We are opening that event to runners to come and have fun but it is also open to experienced runners,” he said.
Hussein, a three-time Honolulu Marathon champion, has also promised to deliver an outstanding event as compared to last year’s edition of the event.
He revealed that during last year’s event, the Local Organising Committee had limited knowledge in regard to hosting the event but they have since learned from their mistakes.

The event was initially scheduled for Sunday, May 21.
“Last year we had a very successful event despite us having a very short time to organise it. There were some few mistakes we made and we’ve had one year to correct everything and I can confidently promise that this year’s edition will be much better,” he said.
