Gout Gout continues to attract attention, and his performance this year will be instrumental to how his budding career develops

Australian teen sensation Gout Gout has been grabbing the headlines since breaking one of the longest 200-meter records in December 2024.

At just 16, Gout Gout smashed one of Australia's most famous sporting records. The teen sprinting prodigy had already set stratospheric expectations when he claimed silver at the world under-20s championships in August last year in a time of 20.60, then lowered his personal best to 20.29 at the Queensland All Schools Championships.

However, it was Peter Norman's 200m record that had stood for 56 years that saw the Queenslander of South Sudanese heritage endear himself to the world. Gout Gout who has been likened to sprint King and the fastest man in the world Usain Bolt, reinforced his standing as one of the world's most exciting sprinters with a jaw-dropping 20.04 seconds at the Australian All Schools Championships in Brisbane.

After achieving that milestone, Gout Gout has opened up on the immense pressure to deliver best times. While extreme pressure isn't healthy, Gout said it is what brings out the best in him. "I've been getting pressure. My video went viral right before world juniors," Gout said as reported by SBSNews.

"You know what they say, pressure makes diamonds. I'm better than a diamond right now," he added. Norman managed 20.06 sec in 200m to set a national record at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Gout is now the second fastest under-18 sprinter over 200m behind only US athlete Erriyon Knighton who set the world record of 19.84s as a 17-year-old in 2021. Former underage world record-holder Usain Bolt ran 200m in 20.13s as a 16-year-old in 2003, and holds the 200m all-age world record of 19.19s set at the 2009 world championships.
