Women-only marathon world record holder Peres Jepchirchir has made a bold promise to all her fans and Kenyans at large ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics where she is the defending champion of the women's marathon.

Women-only world marathon record holder Peres Jepchirchir has set lofty ambitions ahead of defending her marathon title at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

During the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Jepchirchir oozed class as she cut the tape to win her first Olympic title and she is confident of doing well as she heads for her second Olympic Games.

She has been selected alongside two-time Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri and former world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei with the 2022 New York City Marathon champion, Sharon Lokedi, being picked as a reserve.

Jepchirchir is clearly in the form of her life since not more than two weeks ago, she shattered the women-only marathon world record at the London Marathon where she clocked an impressive time of 2:16:16.

“I want to wish the whole team all the best and I would like to speak on behalf of the team. We thank God for being selected and we shall be going there as a team.

“Our hope is to go and run well because we know we are going to run for Kenyans and not only for us. For you guys (fans), pray for us and support us in any way and we are going to do our best…we promise our fans and all Kenyans,” Jepchirchir said during an interview.

Meanwhile, the men’s field is headlined by defending champion Eliud Kipchoge, who will be looking to make history as the first man to win three Olympic gold medals in the marathon.

The five-time Berlin Marathon champion will be joined by Tokyo Marathon champion Benson Kipruto and newly-crowned London Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso. Timothy Kiplagat has been included in the team as a reserve.
