Paris Olympics: Ferdinand Omanyala, Kishane Thompson claim wins as Noah Lyles is beaten in men's 100m first round

Ferdinand Omanyala oozed class as he punched his ticket to the men's 100m semis at the Paris Olympic Games where he will lock horns with his rivals Noah Lyles, Kishane Thompson, and Co.

Ferdinand Omanyala and Kishane Thompson were impressive as they launched their Olympic campaigns in the men’s 100m first round at the Paris Olympics.

Kishane Thompson, competing in heat one, looked comfortable taking an easy win in 10.00 with Benjamin Azamati coming in second in 10.08. Reynaldo Espinosa completed the podium in 10.11.

Competing in Heat two, Omanyala had been paired alongside Italy’s Chituru Ali, Germany’s Joshua Hartmann and Devin Augustine among other formidable opponents.

Omanyala also took an easy win, clocking an impressive 10.08 as Chituru Ali finished second in an impressive 10.12 with Joshua Hartman completing the podium in a stunning 10.16.

Omanyala has been impressive this season and went into the race as the second fastest man in the world thanks to the 9.79 he clocked at the Kenyan Olympic trials.

He competed at the Prefontaine Classic, finishing an impressive second behind Christian Coleman before his third-place finish at the Racers Grand Prix. Oblique Seville and Noah Lyles finished second and third respectively.

The Commonwealth Games champion’s final race before the Olympics was the FBK Games in Hengelo where he claimed top honours and was going into the Olympics with the much-needed confidence.

The third heat comprised Noah Lyles, South Africa’s ace Shaun Maswanganyi and Germany’s Owen Ansah. Lyles had an awful start, finishing second in 10.04.

The fourth heat comprised Oblique Seville and Nigeria’s Tejiri Ashe as the strongest in the field. Seville surged to the front for a win, clocking a stunning 9.99 as Hakim Sani Brown finished second in 10.02. Puripol Boonson completed the podium in 10.13.

Kayinsola Ajayi won the fifth heat in 10.02, beating defending champion Marcell Jacobs who finished second in 10.05. Abdul-Rasheed Saminu completed the podium in a stunning 10.06 to make the cut to the semifinal.

Akani Simbine won the sixth heat as Ackeem Blake came in second in 10.03 and 10.06 respectively. Rikkoi Brathwaite completed the podium in 10.13. Kenny Bednarek took the win in heat seven, clocking a stunning 9.97 as Emmanuel Eseme came in second in 9.98. Adre de Grasse completed the podium, stopping the clock at 10.07.

The final heat saw Fred Kerley take the op honours in 9.97 as Letsile Tebogo and Zharnel Hughes finished second and third in 10.01 and 10.03.
