Team Kenya's middle distance coach Bernard Ouma is not predicting any medals from the athletes as he says there are many factors that determine their performance on race day.
Many Kenyans are banking on world 1500m record holder Faith Kipyegon, world 800m champion Mary Moraa, world silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi and world 10,000m record holder Beatrice Chebet to medal at the Olympic Games but he chose not to comment on that.
Speaking as a sports scientist, Ouma insisted that a lot of factors contribute to an athletes’ performance in the final but people are usually so quick to judge owing to the athletes performance in the build up to the Olympics.

“When you talk of predictions, there must be data to back it up and I’m now talking to you as a sports scientist. When you talk of prediction there are a lot of things going on and there are a lot of determinants and data,” Ouma said.
“People will predict and they are very judgmental, they will judge you from the last one or two performances and say that is a gold medal but it’s not very easy,” he added.
The veteran coach added that they need to be mentally, psychologically, and physiologically ready and fans need to support them and not pressure them.

Chebet, who earned a late call-up to the 800m Team Kenya Olympic team, has revealed how Mary Moraa has helped her improve over the weeks they have been training together.
He noted that ladies even face a greater challenge because periods might come on race day, and that may change a lot of things.
“Apart from mental, physiological and psychological, we need to support them. People are working on figures and predictions of who may win a medal or not…we don’t know at the moment,” Ouma said
“However, we may say that 80%, Moraa is going to medal, the color of the medal we may not tell. You may not know, these are human participants. She is a lady and what if her menses appear on the day of the final, there are many other factors.”
