Paris 2024 Olympics: Ugandan star Orogot cruises to confident 200m victory as African boys crowd into semifinals

Two Zimbabweans catch the eye with automatic progress into semifinals.

Fast rising Ugandan sprinted Tarsis Gracious Orogot coasted in the semifinal of Paris Olympics 200m after winning the second heat on day five of Track and Field events.

Orogot scorched the field compising of highly talented sprinted from across the globe and stopped in 20.32, traced closely by Wanya McCoy from Caribbean powerhouse Bahamas 20.35 as Brazilian Renan Correa completed the automatic qualifying slots.

Nigeria’s Udodi Onuzurike and Jamaica’s Andrew Hudson flew off the blocks after reacting quickly but Orogot’s growing stature saw him surge in front to claim a morale boosting victory and join other big boys in the semifinals.

The opening heat of men’s 200m was also won by an African as Liberia’s Joseph Fahnbulleh led Faustine Desalu of Italy and South Africa’s Wayde Van Niekerk into the semis.

The third head was also captured by a budding African boy as Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo put behind his heartbreak from the 100m final to boss his specialist race in 20.10. He was trailed in second place by Makankaishe Charamba of Zimbabwe in 20.27 as Italy’s Filipo Tortu held down third place in 20.29.

In heat five, Zimbabwe’s Tapiwanashe Makarawu trailed Erryon Knighton of the United States into the automatic qualifying spots after running a wonderful bend and stopped the clock in 20.07 Shawn Maswanganyi of South Africa completed the third automatic spot in 20.20.
