The women's 1500m final will see Faith Kipyegon lock horns with Gudaf Tsegay, the Ethiopian runner who almost landed her in hot soup in the women's 5000m final.

Faith Kipyegon faces off against serial rival Gudaf Tsegay in the women’s 1500m final on Saturday night with her main focus on winning her third Olympic title over the distance.

Kipyegon started her Olympic campaign on quite a sad note and will have to be cautious going into the 1500m final. She was disqualified in the women’s 1500m final before an appeal was filed and her silver medal reinstated.

She had been disqualified for obstructing Tsegay in the tight race and was given a yellow card heading to the women’s 1500m final.

She again clashes against Tsegay, who has yet to win a medal in her Olympic campaign. The Ethiopian finished ninth in the women’s 5000m race won by Beatrice Chebet. Kipyegon claimed a silver as Sifan Hassan completed the podium.

The two-time Olympic champion now heads to the final aware that she has to take caution as she chases the historic feat. She has been impressive this season despite a slight injury setback that saw her start her season late.

Kipyegon was no fluke as she shattered the world record at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris, just weeks before the Olympic Games. The 1500m is her favourite and she will be out to prove herself going up against a strong field.

Joining Tsegay will be Diribe Welteji, a formidable 1500m runner who has made a name for herself at a young age. She seeks her first Olympic medal and will be out to challenge Kipyegon for the throne.

Another athlete out to challenge Kipyegon will be Laura Muir who finished second at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Muir has struggled to make an impact this season and she will be out to make amends in the final of the women’s race.

Australia’s Jessica Hull goes into the race with much-needed confidence after finishing second behind Kipyegon at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris. The sensational athlete then raced at the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco where she shattered the 2000m world record.

America’s Nikki Hiltz enters the race with the hope of attaining a podium finish after enjoying a great season so far. Summing it up with an Olympic medal will mean the world to her.

Kipyegon will enjoy the company of US-based Susan Ejore who is donning the Kenyan jersey for the first time.
