Jamaica have been dealt a bigger blow as legendary sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce missed from the start list for the semi-finals of the women’s 100m at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic games.
Fraser-Pryce, who was set to line up in a star-studded semi-final that included America’s Sha’Carri Richardson and St. Lucia’s Julian Alfred in lane four, was handed a DNS by the race organisers.
According to Trishana C. McGowan, the iconic sprinter withdrew following a hamstring injury during warm-up.
The severity of the injury remains uncertain, but sources close to the athlete believe she something felt in the hamstring.
Alfred ended up winning the semi-final, with Richardson coming second.
The 37-year-old Jamaican, the Olympic champion in the event at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, withdrew prior to her semi-final on Saturday night (3 August) at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Fraser-Pryce was looking to claim a medal in the 100m for a fifth consecutive Games, having won bronze in 2016 and silver in 2021.
Fraser-Pryce is still scheduled to run with the Jamaicans' 4x100m relay team.
