Sifan Hassan achieved a historic feat, winning the gold medal in the women's marathon at the Paris Olympics, adding to her two bronze medals in the 5000m and 10,000m.

The trio of reigning Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri, London Marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir and Sharon Lokedi descended on the Olympic marathon tough course to make Kenya proud and take the three top slots.

However, Sifan Hassan outsmarted the Kenyan trio to claim the win in a new Olympic record. World record holder Tigst Assefa finished second as Hellen Obiri managed to seal the podium.

The Dutchwoman crossed the finish line in a time of 2:22:55 as the Ethiopian marathon star finished second in a time of 2:22:58. Obiri completed the podium, clocking a personal best time of 2:23:10 to cross the finish line.

Lokedi finished an impressive fourth in a personal best time of 2:23:14 as defending champion Jepchirchir finished 15th in a time of 2:26:51.

Meanwhile, the race started with Bahraini’s Eunice Chumba leading from the front as the athletes passed the 5km mark with Hellen Obiri running closely.

Uganda’s Stella Chesang and defending champion Peres Jepchirchir were also running from the front. The 2022 New York City Marathon champion was in the mix, looking comfortable running in 16th place.

As the athletes passed the 10km mark, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, the world record holder took charge with Amane Beriso running behind her. The Kenyan duo was running side-by-side in the leading pack with Chesang, and Tanzani’s Magdalena Shauri also running from the front.

As the athletes went up the incline, the pack started breaking with the lead pack led by Obiri. Passing the 15km mark, Jepchirchir also looked comfortable running from the front and picking the pace up.

Passing the 21km mark, Obiri and Jepchirchir were running in the lead group with Lokedi also in the mix. The group was led by Jessica Stenson of Australia who was looking poised and ready to attack.

Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan was also looking comfortable, racing in the leading pack. The marathon is her third race at the Olympics following her bronze medals in the women’s 5000m and 10,000m.

Passing the 30km mark, Lokedi crossed the finish line first with Beriso running in second place. Obiri and Assefa were running in second and third place. Passing the 35km mark, Jepchirchir was dropped and started trailing.

Hassan was looking comfortable running with the leading pack passing the 40km mark. Obiri and Lokedi were the only Kenyans in the lead group with Assefa and Beriso also showcasing their prowess of their marathon.

After passing the 40km mark, world champion Beriso was dropped with the four athletes bidding to win the historic Olympic gold. At the 41km mark, they were all looking good with no one showing any signs of distress.

With 1km to go, Obiri was running from the front with Lokedi on her side. Hassan and world record holder Assefa running behind slowly. Lokedi was then dropped with the finish line just less than a km away.

With the finish line in sight, it was a battle between Hassan and Assefa but it was the Dutchwoman who impressed with her track mastery. She unleashed a finishing kick, crossing the finish line first to make history with her first Olympic gold medal in the marathon.
