Gatlin has revealed what went wrong for Sha'Carri Richardson as she lost to Saint Lucia's Julian Alfred in the final of the 100m race at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics.

American sprint icon Justin Gatlin has explained what went wrong for Sha’Carri Richardson in the final of the 2024 Olympic Games 100m race, where she had to settle for second after losing to Saint Lucia’s Julian Alfred on Saturday night.

The three-time NCAA champion had pulled off a stunning victory in the Stade de France, beating pre-race favorite Richardson to gold in 10.72 seconds and giving Saint Lucia its first Olympic medal in the history of the Games.

Richardson claimed silver in 10.87 while her compatriot Melissa Jefferson took bronze in 10.92, representing the first time American runners have won two medals in the event since Atlanta 1996.

However, she will feel she failed to live up to expectations, and Gatlin, who has previously found himself in a position where he failed to win a race many had tipped him to back in 2015 at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing China, offered his expertise as to what may have gone wrong for Richardson.

“I think Sha’Carri is known to be a fighter, that is how she has made her mark in the sport. She has fought the world. We know it because you can see it in her races. When she comes across that line, she is roaring,” Gatlin said on the Night Cap podcast.

“Watching her run, she did not show that in the semis and the finals. Just like the superbowl, when you get to that Olympic line, everything you think of about being an Olympic medalist or going to the superbowl, that is when flashbacks come to you. That moment is here now.

“It is a heavy moment you have to put on your back when the gun goes off, so I think sometimes, it gets bigger than you and the preparation, you have to put to the side and say, everything that got me to this point, I will do it again.

“I don’t think the Sha’Carri we know showed up today, and that is nothing against  her, but I believe the one that showed up at the Olympic trials would have handled business today. It would have been a close and very competitive race.”

Gatlin has blamed her underwhelming performance on her bad start, something she seriously needs to work on in order to get better.

In the race, she could not make groud after her bad start, as Alfred dominated the whole race from start to finish.

The 2004 Olympic champion referenced what his former coach Dennis Mitchell -who is now Richardson’s coach, used to insist about having bad starts.

“My former coach is actually her coach. He always said, 9.7 doesn't catch 9.7, so you cannot give a deficit to an individual that is your equal when you are competing against her. You have to make sure you go through your checks and balances and when the gun goes off, anything you gotta hit on your strong suit.

“Her strong suit is the second half. She has to be a striking distance of Julian Alfred because Alfred is strong. She gonna push through that line and that is what she did. She got ahead and did not relinquish that lead.

“With Usain Bolt, he worked on his start. You ain’t gotta be in front. We know what she can do at 50 meters, so the fact is, the Olympic gold is somewhere else.Let her use that as motivation to do better. We need to see a 10.5.”
