Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omayala’s hopes for an Olympic medal were dealt a deathly blow as he failed to qualify to the final from the third semi final of the 100m race at the ongoing Paris 2024 games.
Omanyala finished a disappointing second last in 10.08 seconds, in a a race Jamaica's Kishane Thompson and Fred Kerley of USA finished 1st and 2nd in 9.80 and 9.84 respectively.
Omanyala lost at this very stage three years ago during the Tokyo Olympic games, and will now be wondering what next with time running short on his career, with the next edition of the games not coming until 2028.
Meanwhile, Akani Simbine finished top of heat two on 9.86, ahead of Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo who finished second on 9.91, with defending champion Larmont Marcell Jacobs just getting the third slot ahead of Kenny Bednarek on 9.92 and 9.93 seconds respectively.
In heat one, Jamaican sprint sensation Oblique Seville narrowly edged out Noah Lyles in the first semi-final of the 100m at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic games on Sunday.
Seville, who has already beaten Lyles once in Jamaica earlier this season, looked comfortable throughout, getting off to a great start and maintaining his top end speed before crossing the line first in a time of 9.80 seconds, while Noah Lyles also proceeded to the final in 9.83 seconds, enough to put him second.
Great Britain’s Louie Hinchcliffe sealed the final slot on 9.87 seconds.
With the semifinals done and dusted, the eight runners vying for the title of fastest man on the planet have now been decided.
It should make for an electric final!
