Abraham Kibiwott, Amos Serem, and Simon Koech step on the track tonight for the men's 3000m steeplechase final to reclaim Kenya's lost glory.

Abraham Kibiwott, Amos Serem and Simon Koech secured their slots in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final scheduled for tonight (Wednesday) at the Stade de France.

Kibiwott and Koech both finished third in their respective heats of the first round with Serem finishing distant sixth in his heat. This was after he was allegedly pushed from behind and stumbled and Athletics Kenya had to appeal for him to be included in the final.

The Kenyan stars will have eyes on the prize, having fingers crossed to reclaim the steeplechase title that was last won by Conseslus Kipruto at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Kenya has for long dominated the steeplechase on the global stages but after the retirement of bigwigs, it has been a challenge for th youngsters to make an impact.

Julius Korir started Kenya’s winning streak on the Olympic stage at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and since then, Kenya dominated until the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games where Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali snatched the win from the Kenyans.

Julius Kariuki, Matthew Birir, Joseph Keter, and Rueben Kosgei continued the winning streak from Korir before Ezekiel Kemboi and Brimin Kipruto took charge. Conseslus took the reigns from Kemboi and won the Rio Olympic Games before things went haywire.

Kibiwott, Serem and Koech have the pressure to bring the title that has for long belonged to Kenya. However, they face a stern test from the defending champion who has raced sparingly this season.

The reigning world champion knows when to show up in global championships and he will be out to defend his title after being off to a great start with a win in the first round.

The Kenyans will also face opposition from the world record holder, Lamecha Girma, who has yet to win a gold medal on the Olympic stage. Girma finished second behind Bakkali at the Tokyo Olympics and he wants to go one place better. Japan’s Ryuji Muira takes on the strong field with the hope of making headlines.

The Kenyans face opposition but will they shake that off and reclaim the men’s 3000m steeplechase title?
