Pan Zhanle keeps China at the top of the medal table with nine golds, followed by Japan and the host country, France.

Pan Zhanle of China set a new world record in the men’s 100-meter freestyle at the Paris Olympics, clocking 46.40 seconds to win gold.

The 19-year-old’s performance not only earned him China’s first swimming gold medal of the Games but also surpassed his previous world record of 46.80 seconds, set at the world championships in Doha earlier this year.

Pan’s victory came in a thrilling race, with Australia’s Kyle Chalmers taking silver with a time of 47.48 seconds and Romania’s David Popovici securing bronze in 47.49 seconds.

Pan’s achievement was met with awe, as he described the moment as “magical.”

This win is significant for Pan and the Chinese swimming team, which has faced intense scrutiny due to recent doping allegations.

Pan has not been involved in these controversies, and his team has undergone rigorous testing, sometimes up to three or four times a week, to ensure compliance with anti-doping regulations.

Pan commented on the testing, saying, “This was standard. The tests were done under all the regulations. I don’t think it influenced my performance.”

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has recently expressed concerns about doping cases and contamination issues, urging for stringent measures to uphold the sport’s integrity.

Pan Zhanle’s record-breaking swim highlights his extraordinary talent and also represents a positive milestone for Chinese swimming amidst ongoing challenges.
