Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone's father has shared how faith shaped her upbringing, guiding her athletic journey and personal growth.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has become one of the most recognizable names in the world of athletics not only for her remarkable accomplishments on the track but also for the faith that she credits as the foundation of her success.

As a two-time Olympic champion and multiple world record holder in the 400m hurdles, McLaughlin-Levrone’s achievements are remarkable yet her story is deeply rooted in values that transcend sports.

These values, instilled by her parents, Willie Levrone and Mary McLaughlin, continue to guide her today.

In a 2023 op-ed for Runnerspace.com, Willie McLaughlin opened up about the pivotal role that faith has played in his daughter’s journey, emphasizing that it was his and his wife’s Christian beliefs that shaped their approach to parenting and life.

“It is our Christian faith that guides my wife and I along this journey. And it is this same faith that we instilled in our kids,” Willie shared.

This deep-seated belief in God has been a constant presence in McLaughlin-Levrone’s life from a young age, long before she made her mark on the international stage.

Born on August 7, 1999, in New Jersey, Sydney was the third of four children raised in a family with a strong athletic background.

Her parents, both former athletes, noticed early on that their daughter possessed an extraordinary talent for running.

By the time she was six years old, they knew that she had something special. However, it was not just her athletic ability that they nurtured—it was her faith as well.

Willie and Mary’s approach to raising Sydney was rooted in the belief that faith would be the guiding force through life’s challenges, both on and off the track.

“This is important to us because it dictates how we view the world and how we treat the many people that we encounter along the way. Life is not always easy, and we make mistakes now and then," he explained.

For Sydney, these lessons have been integral in shaping her mindset as she competes on the world stage.

McLaughlin-Levrone’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary. She first broke the 400m hurdles world record at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, then shattered it again a month later to claim gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

Since then, she has continued to break barriers, setting world records and winning more titles, including another Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games, where she clocked an astonishing 51.37 seconds. Throughout her journey, her faith has been a constant source of strength.

After breaking the world record at the 2021 Olympic Trials, McLaughlin-Levrone credited her success to her faith, expressing her gratitude to God.

“I’m just grateful for my faith, and to God for guiding me through all of that and finding my identity in him and not in myself or in my performance. I think that’s given me so much freedom to just run the race,” she told Olympics.com.

Her husband, Andre Levrone, is also a person of deep faith, further enriching the spiritual foundation of her life.

A former NFL player Andre has shifted his focus to pursuing religious studies at seminary a path that mirrors the couple’s shared devotion to their beliefs.
