Abraham Kibiwot has made a bold promise to Kenyan fans ahead of the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Newly crowned Olympic 3000m steeplechase bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwot has made a daring promise to Kenyans ahead of the 2025 World Championships.

Kibiwot promised that he would work around the clock with his fellow steeplechasers to bring back steeplechase glory to Kenya. Kenya has been dominant in the water and barrier event but since 2021, Kenyans have struggled to make an impact on the global stage.

Kenya held the Olympic title since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games courtesy of Julius Korir, Julius Kariuki, Ezekiel Kemboi, Rueben Kosgei, and Conseslus Kipruto among other steeplechase stars who rocked the global stage.

However, the title was snatched at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games by Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali who also denied the Kenyans a chance to impress at the just concluded Paris Olympic Games.

However, Kibiwot has made a bold promise to Kenyans come next year, at the World Championships. He disclosed that Team Kenya had plans to win the gold medal in Paris but a few missteps cost them.

“We had a plan to win the gold medal but we thank God for what we did. I want to urge all the fans that next year, we shall bring back the medal where it belongs,” Kibiwot said.

“The race was good, I fought together with my colleagues and we managed to get a bronze medal. By next year we shall have made a great comeback and we shall bring the gold medal back home,” he added.

Speaking at the same time was five-time African javelin champion Julius Yego who insisted that the Paris Olympics were his best Olympic Games, noting that he gave his all.

Despite getting a medal, Yego was proud to see the changes happening in the javelin scene, hoping that at the LA 2028 Olympic Games, there will be Kenyan athletes competing in the event.

"I enjoyed the Olympics, it was the best ever despite not getting a medal. I was a bit disappointed not to get a medal but I did my best. It was fantastic and I enjoyed Paris, it was amazing," he said.
