The iconic stadium in heart of Nairobi is set for upgrades ahead of Kip Keino Classic and 2024 CHAN tournament.

Athletes in the country are blazing for a fresh start as the Nyayo National Stadium prepares to close for major upgrades after Saturday’s national trials for the World Athletics Relay Championships.

The stadium, which has produced heroes and heroines will be fitted with a new tartan running track, setting the stage for potentially record-breaking performances by stars like Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet later this year.

The new surface will be installed by Spanish company Mondo which is renowned across the globe for its world-class track installations.

According to Athletics Kenya (AK) director in charge of development, Barnaba Korir, the project was set to begin earlier but was delayed to allow the trials to take place first.

“We want to thank the government for fast-tracking the process and all is for the benefit of sports,” said Korir in an interview with Nation.

Meanwhile, the trials themselves will feature events in 100m, 400m, hurdles, steeplechase, high jump, and long jump.

AK director of competitions and technical, Paul Mutwii, confirmed that elite sprinters such as Ferdinand Omanyala, Mark Otieno, and Zablon Ekwam will skip the trials to race in the Botswana Golden Grand Prix but remain under consideration for relay selection.

“Those going for Botswana must return good times to warrant selection in the team,” said Mutwii.

Only invited athletes will compete in the Nyayo trials, with the 100m men’s event set to name six athletes, four of whom will secure automatic qualification based on their race positions.

The last time a track was laid there was in 2017, replacing an older 2010 version.

The return of a fresh, high-quality track is timely because World record holder Faith Kipyegon and double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet are expected to take full advantage of the improved conditions during the prestigious Kip Keino Classic World Athletics Gold Tour set for May 31.

The renovation is part of broader preparations for the rescheduled 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN), now slated for August 2 to 28.

The Nyayo Stadium, alongside Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), is undergoing upgrades to meet international standards.

Both venues previously received Mondo tracks in 2017 in preparation for the World Athletics Under-18 Championships, which were hosted in Nairobi.
