The former Olympic great has sent Team Kenya a motivational message as they prepare to launch their Paris 2024 campaign.

Former Olympian and current President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), Paul Tergat, has sent a heartfelt message to Team Kenya as they gear up for the Paris Olympic Games.

His words come at a crucial time, with a section of the team already having launched their campaign. The national men's sevens side, Kenya 7s, faced tough competition against Argentina and Australia on Wednesday, putting up spirited performances but ultimately losing 31-12 and 21-7, respectively.

Despite these setbacks, the majority of the Kenyan delegation, consisting mainly of track and field athletes, will not begin competing until August. The women’s volleyball team, Malkia Stars, will also commence their campaign shortly.

Writing in Pulse Weekly’s special magazine edition on Team Kenya, Tergat expressed his unwavering support and optimism for the athletes. He drew parallels to Kenya's most successful Olympic performance in 2008, where they won six gold medals and were ranked 13th overall.

“As the Paris 2024 games begin, I have no doubt in my mind that you are ready to show up and leave it all on the field of play," Tergat wrote.

"As an Olympian myself, I am familiar with the weight on your shoulders as you carry the hopes and dreams of the 50 million plus Kenyans who will be cheering and supporting you."

Tergat also highlighted the significance of the Kenya sevens team's participation, noting, “We appreciate the dedication and grit by the Kenya sevens team who will make a third consecutive Olympic appearance but most importantly it will the first Kenyan participants to step out in the National colors at the Paris Games, two days before the opening ceremony.”

He praised the historical achievements of Kenyan athletes in various disciplines

“Olympic Games are more than just competing, they are about the spirit of Olympism, inclusion and fair play.

“As Paris celebrates gender-equal games, I would like to congratulate two history makers, Alexander Ndolo and Zeddy Cherotich for becoming the first Kenyan women to qualify for the Olympic games in Fencing and Judo respectively."

“Our Volleyball Queens have maintained incredible consistency to make it to two Olympic games back to back, true stars of the sport,” he continued.

Tergat also looked forward to the athletics competition starting August 1st, confident in Kenya's dominance: “You will indeed dominate the purple track at the Stade De France while our swimmers will absolutely make a splash at the Aquatic Centre. The stage belongs to you.”

In closing, Tergat offered words of encouragement: “We are behind you in every step of the way, take steady strides into the Stade De France and own it because this is your time.”

With Tergat's motivational words, Team Kenya heads into the Paris Olympic Games with the full support and hopes of their nation behind them.
