Noah Lyles surpasses Usain Bolt with highest sub-20 performances in 200m in history

Noah Lyles now tops the list of the men who have posted the most sub-20 performances in the 200m in history.

Noah Lyles has surpassed Usain Bolt as one of the greatest 200m runners, recording the most sub-20 performances in history.

Bolt, the world record holder over the distance has recorded 34 victories clocking under 20 seconds but Lyles surpassed him with the 35th at the Diamond League Meeting in London last year where he clocked 19.47 to win the race.

The triple world champion then extended his winning streak to the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary where he clocked 19.76 in the semifinal before stopping the clock at 19.52 in the final of the race.

He was not done with his winning streak as he proceeded to the Diamond League Meeting in Zurich, winning in 19.80. In 2024, the Olympic Games bronze medallist opened his season at the USATF New York City Grand Prix where he clocked 19.77 to win.

At the US Olympic trials, the American sprint king was unstoppable as he won the semifinal and final in world leading times of 19.60 and 19.53. Bolt’s last 200m race was at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, where he won the race in 19.78.

The 26-year-old has now recorded 40 sub-20 performances over the distance, topping the list of the most performances in history.

Kenny Bednarek comes third in the list with his 25 performances and this season, he has also been in great shape, setting a world leading time of 19.67 to win the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar.

Bednarek also recorded a personal best time at the US Olympic trials 200m final, clocking a stunning 19.59 to cross the finish line behind Lyles in the final of the 200m.

American sprint legend Michael Johnson and Frankie Fredericks tie on fourth-place with 24 performances before Erriyon Knighton who has 20 impressive performances. Wallace Spearmon also ties with Knighton with 20 sub-20 performances.

Tyson Gay and Andre de Grasse have recorded 14 sub-20 performances with Carl Lewis and Yohan Blake coming in seventh and eighth with 10 and nine sub-20 performances respectively.
