Noah Lyles believes he can threaten Wayde van Niekerk's 400m World Record of 43.03s when he decides to focus on the event.

Newly crowned Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles has a new goal other than breaking Usain Bolt's sprint World Records (WR) as he now believes he can threaten Wayde van Niekerk's 400m landmark time of 43.03s.

The American speedster who has always targeted erasing Bolt's sprint WRs of 9.58s and 19.19s all to no avail after several years, thinks he can re-channel his energy in the 400m and has a good chance of threatening the record in the event.

Lyles made this bold declaration on @ShannonSharpe and @ochocinco’s @NightcapShow_ podcast when asked about his 400m prospects while drawing comparisons to training partner Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago.

"Jereem Richards – he is a 19.80 200m runner and he decided that he was going to focus more on the 400m this year. He was in that (Olympic) final, he got fourth with 43.78 new National record and I believe it’s in the top 10 all-time fastest times…," he stated.

"My PR is 19.3 in the 200m. And I have some pretty good strength on me as well. I truly would like to take a shot at the world record if I decide to move to the 400m truly and give it my 100% for multiple years – yeah I’m going after the world record.”

Van Niekerk obliterated Michael Johnson's previous 400m WR of 43.18s with a blazing new 43.03s at the Rio 2016 0lympic Games.

When Sharpe reiterated what the 200m and 400m records were, Lyles didn't hold back on his words and confidence.

“My brain understands it,” responded the Paris Olympic 200m bronze medallist. “My body doesn’t know the difference. Why would my body think that’s a hard time? My body doesn’t know that that’s hard. If I keep telling it to get faster and faster, it’s going to try and adapt. It’s going to keep moving toward that time.”

Lyles’ 400m personal best remains 47.04s from when he was a high schooler in 2016 and has not run the event since then.

Before Paris Olympics, the 27-year-old was hopeful he would be part of Team USA's 4x400m relay after splitting 45.68s as the third leg runner of the American squad that took silver at the 2024 World Indoor Championships.

Unfortunately, he didn't compete in any of the relays after testing positive for COVID two days before the 200m final, where he settled for the bronze medal.
