Niels Laros faces a battle to win the 2024 Men's Rising Star Award after making the final list.

The Dutch, 19, will come up against Italy's Mattia Furlani and Jaydon Hibbert of Jamaica for this year's best U20 athlete at the World Athletics Awards 2024.

Laros set a world under-20 record over 1000m of 2:14.37 in Hengelo in July. A Month later, he placed sixth at the 2024 Paris Olympics over 1500m and ran a personal best and European U20 record.

The fast-rising middle and long distance runner also set a new Dutch record and European U20 record for the 5km, running 13:26 on the road in Monaco, February.

Furlani, on his part, holds the European U20 indoor record for the long jump. In May 2023, at age 18, he leapt 8.44 m with wind assistance in the event, a mark better than the world U20 record and the longest in history by an U20 athlete in all conditions. He bagged silver at the Paris Olympics and boasts of silver at the World Indoor Championships.

Hibbert has claimed the World U20 triple jump lead and placed fourth in the Paris Olympics.

The nominations reflect some of the standout performances that the sport has witnessed this year, at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, World Athletics Indoor Championships, World Athletics U20 Championships, World Athletics Cross Country Championships, one-day meeting circuits and other events around the world. The winner will be announced on World Athletics' platforms on December 1.
