Gabby Thomas has explained why she was not affected by Shericka Jackson's absence from the women's 200m at the Paris Olympic Games.
Gabby Thomas has insisted that Shericka Jackson’s absence from the 200m at the Paris Olympic Games did not guarantee her an automatic gold medal following the presence of Julien Alfred in the race.
The triple Olympic champion explained was fresh-from competing in the heats where she comfortable cruised to victory when she found out that Shericka Jackson did not run her heat.
Jackson opted out of the race after feeling a slight discomfort in the race and did not want to worsen the situation. She had also withdrawn from the women’s 100m to focus on the 200m but her body was not fully fit for her to compete.

'My emotions were all over the place' - Shericka Jackson opens up about Olympic heartache and her relentless pursuit of gold
Shericka Jackson opens up on the heartbreak she endured after a persistent injury forced her to pull out of the Paris 2024 Olympics at the very last minute.
On her part, Julien Alfred was fresh from claiming top honours in the women’s 100m final where she silenced Sha’Carri Richardson and going into the 200m, she posed as a threat to Gabby Thomas’ chances of winning the race.
“I’m hearing that Shericka Jackson did not race just now on my phone. I don’t know what that means for her but I can’t worry about her. I have a new Caribbean girl to worry about,” Gabby Thomas said on Netflix’s Sprint docuseries.
She had made her intentions of winning an Olympic gold medal clear and was not going to rest on her laurels despite the tough opposition that her challengers posed.
Gabby Thomas noted that one of her rituals before going into a race is believing that she had already conquered and it becomes easier for her to execute the race.
“At this point, winning an Olympic gold medal is my only focus. I’m envisioning the stadium, I’m envisioning everyone around me. I’m envisioning how I’m going to feel. You need to know what’s going to happen before it happens,” Gabby Thomas added.
“I mean, people are fighting for milliseconds…those rivalries are very real and intense and that’s just how it is. You really don’t know who is going to win gold.”
