Sheila Chepkirui claims emphatic victory as Kenyan women sweep New York Marathon
Sheila Chepkirui led an all-Kenyan podium finish at the 53rd edition of the New York Marathon with defending champion Hellen Obiri second and Vivian Cheruiyot finished third.
The race’s intensity peaked at the 32k mark, with Tola leading a fierce front pack through in 1:38:17.
However, Nageeye, Chebet, and Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor had other plans, surging past Tola near the 35k mark and covering the last 3k at a blistering 4:37 per mile pace. As they pushed ahead, Tola struggled to keep up, falling behind as did Kamworor, which allowed Korir to surge ahead of the Olympic champion.
In the dramatic final mile, Nageeye’s strategic positioning and kick proved too strong for Chebet.
With less than two minutes to go, The Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist broke away, securing the win in 2:07:39. Chebet followed closely at 2:07:45, while Albert Korir rounded out the top three with a time of 2:08:00. Tola, despite his earlier efforts, finished in fourth at 2:08:12.
Conner Mantz finished as the top American in sixth place with a time of 2:09:00. His compatriot, Clayton Young, crossed shortly after in seventh at 2:09:21.
Nageeye’s victory marked a significant achievement in his marathon career, underscoring his status as one of the sport's most resilient and tactically astute runners.
