World javelin champion Neeraj Chopra has unveiled his new coach whom he hopes will make him a world beating thrower again after coming second best in 2024 with a camp in Africa lined up.

World javelin champion Neeraj Chopra has landed a new coach just before he embarks on a month-long training camp in South Africa.

Chopra’s career is taking a new turn following the retirement of his long-time coach Klaus Bartonietz, whom he has worked with since 2019, and he will now be coached by Czech Republic great Jan Zelezny.

Zelezny is a highly decorated former javelin star, who won three Olympics gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000, and also holds the javelin world record of 98.48m, achieved in 1996.

“Growing up, I admired Jan’s technique and precision and spent a lot of time watching videos of him. He was the best in the sport for so many years, and I believe that working with him will be invaluable because our throwing styles are similar, and his knowledge is unmatched,” Chopra said, while confirming the appointment on Saturday.

The 2020 Olympics champion hopes the new partnership can blossom starting with their camp in Potchefstroom, South Africa in late November.

Chopra hopes the 31-day stint will return him to the winner’s podium after coming second best in 2024 when he failed to defend his Olympics title, finishing second behind Pakistani Arshad Nadeem, and also lost out the Diamond League Trophy to Grenada’s Anderson Peters.

The trip will be fully-funded by the Indian government as they seek to ensure their golden boy is in great shape ahead of his title defence at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

"(He) will start his training early and will be in Potchefstroom for a period of 31 days," the ministry said in a statement, as reported by Indian outlet PTI.

"Neeraj's training session will be funded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and the expenditure will cover his and his Physiotherapist's lodging, boarding and training cost for the period of his stay in South Africa.”

Chopra is not new in the South African town as he has camped there before, including ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics. It offers world class facilities for javelin throwers and he posted one of his best throws there when he managed 87.86m in a meet in 2020.

Key among the things Chopra and his new coach will be looking to achieve in South Africa and next year is a throw of 90m given he is yet to hit the new mark. His personal best is 89.94 which he managed in Stockholm in June 2022.
