The Nairobi City Marathon Local Organising Committee Member Barnaba Korir has announced that they expect to register more than 10,000 athletes to participate in the lucrative event set to take place on Sunday, June 2 in the streets of Nairobi.

Korir revealed that as of now, they have already registered more than 8,000 athletes and are optimistic that before Saturday midnight, the numbers will have risen to beat last year’s event which attracted 10,000 athletes.

“The number of people who are registering for the event is fast-rising and as of now, we have up to 8800. I want to believe that by the end of the week, we shall have gotten to more than 10,000 and we shall beat last year’s numbers,” Korir said.

He added that athletes from 28 countries have confirmed participation in the lucrative event set to take place in the streets of Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday, June 2.

He noted that athletes from Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and some parts of Europe have also registered for the lucrative second edition of the event. Korir added that about 192 athletes from China have confirmed participation in the event.

“This marathon is very important and going from the interest of both local and international athletes, I believe this year’s event is going to be on the same level with the major city marathons taking place all over the world.

We have athletes from Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania…we have athletes from 28 countries who have already confirmed participation. Today morning, around 192 athletes from China registered,” he said.

He also revealed that the prize money for the full marathon was slashed from Ksh 6 million to Ksh 3.5 million since they will be awarding the top 20 athletes. The winner will walk away with Ksh 3.5million while the 20th athlete to cross the finish line will be awarded Ksh 30,000.
