American sprint queen Gabby Thomas has explained how she is struggling to hit the heights in a different race but fans were quick to point out her recent advice to budding runners.

Triple Olympics champion Gabby Thomas might be good at sprinting but she has also been trying out other races.

Thomas is one of the sprinters who enjoyed an incredible 2024 having claimed Olympics gold in 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m, but she has also been going hard in the mile, according to her latest social media post.

The 28-year-old may have never run beyond 400m in a competitive event but she has revealed a fetish for the four-lap race, whose record is currently held by Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon. She tried a hand at the race which left her in bad shape, having clocked 5 minutes and 43 seconds.

“My toxic trait is believing I could run a sub-5 mile,” she posted on X, explaining her failed attempt to run a quicker time.

Thomas would be best advised that a sub-5 mile is no mean feat given over 1,700 runners have managed 4:43:00 in the mile while Kipyegon’s world record is 4:07:67 achieved at the Monaco Diamond League in July 2023.

Those are lofty standards that Thomas will have to hit to achieve her dream whether she is just running for fun or professionally.

The sprinter puts in the yards during training with mile runs among what she takes part in to build her speed and endurance for the short races but it appears a sub-5 may have to be knocked off the list.

However, having advised budding runners to believe in themselves and they can achieve whatever they set their mind on, at the USATF awards gala last week, Thomas will be reminded to take her own advice and ensure she achieves a sub-5 in a mile.
